Mission San Xavier del Bac
Mission San Xavier del Bac
Photographs of the Mission San Xavier del Bac in the 1970s, prior to the chapel's restoration in 1992.
The Mission San Xavier del Bac is located on the Tohono O'odham Reservation, west of Tucson, Arizona. The mission was founded by Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino in 1700 at Bac, the O'odham village, located along the Santa Cruz River. The original mission chapels were lost to time and the present Franciscan church was built in 1783. In 1992, an international team of conservators began a painstaking resortation of the interior. The six images of the chapel in this series are pre-restoration.
