Sacred places on the Tohono O'odham Reservation

Sacred places on the Tohono O'odham Reservation include churches, chapels, shrines and ceremonial houses. This collection of nine photos shows the variety of architecture and sacred spaces on the reservation. Nearly every village has either a church or a chapel. The style of these primarily Roman Catholic churches was heavily influenced by Franciscan missionaries. In addition to the church building, there is often an area in front of the church where religious devotion and dancing take place.
