Almarie Masayestewa with the beginning of a wicker plaque

Summary:
Selected photographs from Helga Teiwes' series documenting Hopi basket weaving.
Description:

Almarie Masayestewa of Hotevilla reaches into a bag full of damp sand and siváapi (rabbitbrush). The damp sand keeps the rabbitbrush from drying out. On her lap sits the beginning of a plaque. The dyed rabbitbrush that has already been woven can be seen to form the beginning pattern at the center of the plaque. Scanned on a Nikon Supercool Scan 9000 at 4000 DPI. Photoshop was used to clean up dust specks via cloning and reformatted from TIFF to JPEG. Digitizing Technician: Michael William Jenkins.
