Almarie Masayestewa starting a wicker plaque

Summary:
Selected photographs from Helga Teiwes' series documenting Hopi basket weaving.
Description:

Almarie Masayestewa of Hotevilla starts a wicker plaque. Here, she lines up siwi (dune broom) strips with the help of a wooden board that consists of two parts and pushes the siváapi (rabbitbrush) tight with her awl. For this plaque, Almarie adds a fourth siwi strip on the end for additional strength. Scanned on a Nikon Supercool Scan 9000 at 4000 DPI. Photoshop was used to clean up dust specks via cloning and reformatted from TIFF to JPEG. Digitizing Technician: Michael William Jenkins.
